Privacy policy
Ment ("we", "us") is a free game for WHOOP members. Your companion, a Ment, grows when you move more than your own usual, and you can play with friends. This policy explains what we collect, why, who can see it, and the choices you have. Ment is run by Mentmates, San Francisco, California. You can reach us at contact@mentmate.io.
What we collect
- Account information. Your email address (for sign-in codes), the name and handle you choose, and your time zone.
-
Your WHOOP data, when you connect WHOOP. You approve this on WHOOP's
own page, and you can withdraw it at any time. We read:
- your WHOOP member ID;
- your daily cycles: start and end times, day strain, energy burned, average and maximum heart rate, and step count;
- your sleep: start and end times, naps, sleep performance, consistency and efficiency, respiratory rate, time in bed and asleep, time in REM and deep sleep, and disturbances;
- your recovery: recovery score, resting heart rate, heart rate variability, and blood oxygen and skin temperature when your device measures them;
- your workouts: sport, start and end times, strain, average and maximum heart rate, energy burned, time in each heart-rate zone, distance and altitude gain.
- Game data we calculate. Your usual activity (your baseline, including your usual strain, sleep and bedtime), points, daily quests, level, the looks you collect, your Ment's daily state and form, and fight and crew results.
- Social data. Friends you add, invites and crew codes you share, the fights and crews you join, and your sharing choices.
- Waitlist. If all WHOOP spots are taken, your place in line.
- Our public lists, if you join one. On mentmate.io/join: your email address, phone number and country. On our company waitlist: your work email, your company's name and size, your country and, if you give them, your phone number and role. For our news ("Stay in the loop" on mentworld.com) and the Bane waitlist (mentworld.com/bane): your email address. We also note the link you came from (such as a campaign tag) and when you agreed to be contacted.
- Device data in the mobile apps. A push notification token, if you allow notifications.
- Technical data. Our servers record IP addresses, browser or device details and request times, for security and troubleshooting. The web app keeps your sign-in session on your device.
- How you use Ment. The days you open the app (and the first and last time that day), which of its tabs you open, when you open Settings or the share sheet (not what you share), and errors the app or our servers run into, with the screen or request they happened on. Before you have an account, we only count how many visits reach each step of signing up, with nothing about who and nothing saved on your device. These records stay in our own database and never include your WHOOP numbers.
We don't read your body measurements, such as height and weight, and we don't keep your WHOOP name, email address or photo. We don't collect contacts, location, advertising identifiers or payment information, and we don't use advertising cookies or third-party analytics trackers.
How we use it
- To run the game: learn your usual activity, award points, run fights and crews, and show your Ment.
- To show other players what you choose to share (see What others can see).
- To send sign-in codes and, if you allow them, notifications. Notifications never include your WHOOP numbers.
- To contact people on our public waitlists about their spot and our launch, or about Ment for companies: by email and, if they gave a number, by phone or text message, as they agreed when they signed up.
- To email our news, about our products and launches, to people who asked for it.
- To email people on the Bane waitlist about Bane and when they can get one.
- To keep Ment secure, fix problems and answer support requests.
- To see which parts of Ment are used and where signing up or the app fails, so we can improve it.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We don't sell your data or use it for advertising. We don't use any of it to build, train or run artificial intelligence or machine-learning systems. We use your WHOOP data only for the game described here, and to support you and keep Ment running: our team can see your Ment's level and points and whether WHOOP is connected, never your WHOOP numbers.
Ment doesn't track you across other websites or apps, and it treats every visitor the same whether or not their browser sends a Do Not Track signal.
What others can see
By default, nobody else sees anything about your activity or your game. You choose what to share:
- Show my Ment to friends. Friends see your Ment's look, level and body.
- Show how I recovered. Friends see your Ment's daily state (charged, steady, drained or asleep) and its form, which follow your WHOOP recovery and sleep.
- Friends leaderboard. If you show your Ment to friends, you appear on their leaderboard by level. If you also turn on "Show my points and streak on the leaderboard", friends see the points you earned this week and your streak.
- Fights. When you start or join one, your opponent sees your percentage above your own usual in that fight.
- Crews. When you join one, its members see your Ment and how close you are to your own weekly target, as a percentage.
- Plain-totals fights and crews. Some fights and crews compare your own numbers instead of percentages. Before you start or join one, Ment asks you to accept that. When you do, your opponent or the crew's members also see your daily average on that fight's or crew's metric (for example your steps a day, km a week, hours of sleep, or WHOOP's Sleep Performance or Strain), and a crew ranks its members by it each week.
Outside a plain-totals fight or crew you joined, other players never see your WHOOP numbers (steps, strain, heart rate, heart rate variability, recovery score, sleep or workouts). Your recovery score, heart rate and heart rate variability are never shared at all. There are no public profiles or public leaderboards, and nothing ranks recovery. Friends, opponents and crewmates see your name and handle. You can change these choices at any time in Settings, and changes take effect immediately.
Who we share data with
We share data only with companies that help us run Ment, under contracts that limit how they can use it:
- Hosting and database: Render.
- Sign-in: Supabase, which holds your email address and sign-in sessions.
- Sign-in email delivery: Resend.
- Push notifications: Expo, Apple and Google receive your device token and the notification text, never your WHOOP data.
- Fonts: Google Fonts serves the web app's typefaces, so it receives web visitors' IP addresses.
WHOOP receives the requests we make on your behalf. We may disclose information when the law requires it. If Ment is acquired or merged, we'll tell you before your data becomes subject to a different policy.

Your choices and rights
In Settings you can export all your data, change what you share, disconnect WHOOP and delete your account. When you delete your account, we show a receipt that lists what was deleted. You can also remove Ment's access from the WHOOP app at any time. To leave a waitlist or our news, write to contact@mentmate.io and we'll remove you from all our lists. If you have a Ment account with the same email, deleting it removes those signups too.
Depending on where you live, you may have the right to access, correct, delete, restrict or port your data, to object to processing, and to withdraw consent. To use these rights, write to contact@mentmate.io. We answer within 30 days. If we decline a request, you can appeal by replying to our answer, and you can complain to your data protection authority.
Legal basis in the EEA and UK. Your WHOOP data is health data. We process it with your explicit consent, which you give when you connect WHOOP and can withdraw at any time by disconnecting WHOOP or deleting your account. We process your account data to provide the service you asked for, technical logs for our legitimate interest in keeping Ment secure, and records of how Ment is used and where it fails for our legitimate interest in improving it. We contact people on our public lists with their consent, which they give when they sign up and can withdraw at any time.
Consumer health data. Our consumer health data privacy policy covers your rights under Washington's My Health My Data Act and similar state laws.
Security
We encrypt data in transit (HTTPS) and at rest. WHOOP access tokens get a second layer of encryption, and access to production systems is limited to the people who run Ment. If a security incident affects your data, we'll notify you, WHOOP and the authorities as the law requires.
Children
Ment is for people 18 and older. We don't knowingly collect data from anyone younger. If you believe a child has signed up, contact us and we'll delete the account.
International transfers
Our providers process data in the United States. Where the law requires it, we rely on safeguards such as the European Commission's Standard Contractual Clauses.
WHOOP
Ment is an independent app. It isn't affiliated with or endorsed by WHOOP. WHOOP's privacy policy covers the data WHOOP holds about you.
Changes to this policy
We'll post changes on this page and update the effective date. For material changes, including any new WHOOP data we want to read, we'll tell you in the app and ask for your consent again where required.
